Does Plucking Facial Hair Stop It From Growing

Plucking your facial hair does not stop it from growing. However, it does slow growth because plucking hair will damage the follicle.

Proper plucking techniques allow you to remove the entire hair from the follicle, suppressing hair growth for up to 6 weeks.

Here's why facial hair plucking is not a long term solution

Hair growth consists of three phases:

  1. Anagen/growing phase
  2. Catagen/regressing phase
  3. Telogen/resting phase

Hairs in the anagen are considered one of the most rapidly replicating cells in humans (self-renewing tissues).

Because your skin is your largest organ and hair plays a massive role in temperature regulation, it's one of those automatic bodily functions that happen for your survival.

Does Plucking Facial Hair Stop It From Growing

As you can see from the image above [bottom right corner], when a hair is plucked, tweezed, or waxed, this is how things look from the inside.

The majority of the hair follicle is removed, leaving a small bulb. The hair follicle itself has been damaged but not the cell.

The remaining healthy anagen cell will signal to your body that the follicle has been damaged and will begin repairing/replacing the hair.

While your hair follicle is regenerating, you can enjoy smooth, hair-free skin. You are also at risk of folliculitis (AKA: ingrown hairs)

Typically, damaged follicles tend to produce weaker hairs or become peach fuzz.

In other cases, the hair is not strong enough to break through the skin and become stuck; this is another leading cause of ingrown hairs.

However, if you continue to tweeze, pluck, or wax your face, this can cause more damage to the sensitive skin on your face and could even lead to a permanent reduction in hair growth (this will only occur after many months/years of plucking).

The bottom line is that plucking does affect hair growth, but it will not stop it completely.

There are other methods you can use to stimulate hairs to inhibit growth.

Stimulating methods are usually "short-term" things such as waxing, tweezing, etc.

Inhibiting methods are "long-term" things such as hormone treatments and medications.

There is little that one can do in the short term to inhibit facial hair growth.

As far as the growth of new facial hair goes, plucking does very little in inhibiting it but will give a "temporary" effect.

Inhibiting facial hair growth would require hormones, laser/IPL hair removal, or electrolysis. These types of treatment are usually long-term and irreversible.
